Garden Carts

Garden Carts can make any Load Lighter

Gardening Newsletter

Garden carts are a great asset if you need to carry anything remotely heavy. Save your back and work much faster with a garden cart.

There are many names for the standard garden cart including Haulers and Wheelbarrows. Whatever name is attached, the main idea is to move material such as dirt or mulch, tools and supplies, plants, and other things easily on wheels.

There are several types of garden carts available depending on the particular task. Examples might include:

Types of Garden Carts:

  • Standard Carryall Garden Carts
  • Heavy Duty Folding Garden Carts
  • Light Duty Folding Garden Carts
  • Flat Hauler Garden Carts
  • Load Dumper Garden Carts
  • Wood Caddy Garden Carts

Even though we give the name “Garden Carts” to this hauling tool, it can be used for so much more than gardening. Essentially anything needing to be carried any distance that weighs a good bit is a candidate.

How do Garden Carts Function

Garden carts work because the loads ride low between the wheels and is balanced over a full length axle. This keeps the load from shifting and the cart from tipping while you work. Basically it’s the carts axel and wheels that are bearing the load instead of your back and arms.

Wheel Basics: The larger the wheels are the easier it is to navigate tougher terrain. If you are going through high grass or weeds, or though sand or over rocks, try to get a garden cart with larger wheels.

Air Tires versus Solid Tires: Air tires (pneumatic tires) are filled with air much like a bicycle tire. The advantages are a tire that will more easily get through more terrain than solid tires will. There is a bounce action to the tires and they absorb the terrain making it easier to push you garden cart.

Solid tires have the advantage of being more durable but will not flow as easily across all-terrains like pneumatic tires will. If you don’t mind an occasional low or flat tire, pneumatic air tires make heavy loads easier.

Garden Cart Handles: It does make it easier on your hands if the handles on your garden cart are cushioned with a rubber or foam material. You can always use gloves either way but a cushioned handle is ideal.

Garden Cart Materials: Basically garden carts are made of wood, metal, plastic, canvas, or a combination thereof. There are advantages to all materials. Canvas is light weight and generally can be folded for easy storage. Plastic garden carts are light weight, easy to care for and rust resistant. Metal carts are better for heavy duty usage and for such task as mixing concrete and hauling heavy rocks.

  • Style – Will be a function of it’s primary use
  • Material – Plastic, Metal, Canvas, Wood
