Ground Cover

Plant Ground Cover for those Problem Areas

Gardening Newsletter

Ground cover plants are low growing and spread quickly to form a dense cover. They are attractive, can cover up problem areas, and help prevent soil erosion.

Some of the typical areas where ground cover might be grown include:

  • Shady areas
  • Extra wet or dry areas
  • Steep banks or slopes
  • Underplantings for shrubs or in beds
  • Around shallow tree roots
  • Between sidewalks and buildings
  • Others…

Ground cover is ideal for any area where you have trouble growing other plants, flowers, or even grass. It can be both a problem solver as well as beautify your landscaping.

Which Ground Cover to Select

There are many different factors that go into which ground cover is best for your site. Some of it depends on taste and part of it depends on the growth zones and other environmental conditions prevalent in your area. Consider the following criteria:

  • Look & Feel are you striving for
  • Temperature Hardiness Zone
  • Soil Conditions
  • Shade Conditions

Soil & Bed Preparation

Follow good procedures that are common for all plants including:

  • Adding organic matter
  • Fertilizing
  • Don’t put additional plants too close together
  • Work the soil
  • Get rid of weeds
  • Get rid of pest
  • Water Considerations

Note: Most ground covers will not tolerate excessive foot traffic. If this is expected put in a walkway before starting your ground cover plants.
